Stimulus Update: Wage Garnishments Suspended

Another friendly stimulus package update - today about wage garnishment.

As part of the federal stimulus package to help with Coronavirus relief, all federal wage garnishments are suspended unless the garnishment is for child support.

Also suspended are:

  • the seizure of tax refunds

  • the reduction of any other federal benefit payments and

  • other involuntary collection efforts

I'm not sure how the state will handle this issue yet, but I believe the answer is most likely that they are or will be suspended.

The federal unemployment benefits are being provided to the states who then will disburse the federal funds. Since the states are distributing federal dollars the federal government has mandated that the states not seize the federal funds for state garnishments. Again, this does not apply to wages that are being garnished for unpaid child support.

Keep an eye on my blog for more updates regarding the stimulus package and how it may affect your personal finances.
